'Bacon Sandwiches & Salvation' NOW £5.99
This month we caught up with Adrian Plass to talk to him about his latest book release 'Bacon Sandwiches & Salvation'.
What inspired you to write your latest book 'Bacon Sandwiches and Salvation'?
I have always enjoyerd reacting to words or terms, and the oppurtunity to do this in a column for the Baptist Times was irresistable. Out of that column grew the book. A shorter answer would be that book is inspired by a lifetime of being around the church and seeing how silly and sad and lovable and lovely we all are at times.
Which is your favourite entry in the book?
My favourite definition, perhaps becuase of my own deep fears in this area is 'Oblivion', which is defined as 'nothing to worry about'.
Which is your favourite Bible verse and why?
Probably the whole of the story of the Prodigal Son because it is such a profound and startingly vulnerable picture of the love that God appears to feel for us.
What is you most embarrassing moment?
Probably the occasion when I was asked to sign a book for a lady I had known for years, but whose name I had forgotten. Trying to be clever, I asked her if she would remind me how she spelt her first name. "Yes" she said rather dryly, " I will. It's P A M." I died on the spot.
Is it true you were once offered 5 million pound never to write
again? If so why did you turn it down?
No, it is not true, and I am amazed at the number of people who believe that this story really happened. I simply wanted to explore the idea through the fiction. Would I have taken the money if it had really happened? I don't think so, but who knows?
Why did you begin writing?
I was ill in the mid-eighties and began to write as a sort of therapy. My first book didn't sell many copies, but the Sacred Diary took off in a most unexpected way and everything else sprang from there.
Who or what has been the biggest inspiration to you?
In terms of writers, undoubtedly CS Lewis, GK Chesterton and Richmal Crompton. As far as people I have known are concerned, there are too many to mention, but my own mother and my wife's mother were pretty special. They were good people who never swerved from the path of goodness and service to others.
Which is your favourite book you have written and why?
Probably 'Ghosts' becuase it is so filled with feelings that mean a great deal to me. Also in terms of setting and situation, it was a very cosy book to write.
Which is your favourite christian book and author?
Possibly 'Orthodoxy' by GK Chesterton, but there are lots of other candidates. 'Christian Uncertainties' by Monica Furlong is another favourite.
How would you like to be remembered?
I don't mind too much. I would like my family to remember me with love, but that's all really.
'Bacon Sandwiches & Salvation' along with a large selection of other titles by Adrian Plass are available either in store or online.
